Duke has a responsibility to notify the campus community about any crimes that pose an ongoing threat to the community as well as for inclusion in its federally mandated Annual Security Report.
A "Campus Security Authority" (CSA) at Duke University is any designated person, paid or unpaid, who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities. Campus Security Authorities are obligated by federal law to report crimes to the Duke University Police Department as soon as practicable.
These crimes include:
Manslaughter by Negligence
Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter
Motor Vehicle Theft
Sex Offenses (to include rape, fondling, incest & statutory rape)
Liquor law violations
Drug abuse violations
Duke is also required to report statistics for bias-related (hate) crimes for the following offenses: murder/non-negligent manslaughter, sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, larceny-theft, vandalism, intimidation, simple assault, and damage/destruction/vandalism of property.
Duke is required to disclose statistics for offenses that occur on campus, in or on non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by our school, and public property within or immediately adjacent to our campus.
As a Campus Security Authority, if someone reveals to you or others in your department that he or she has been a victim, witness or perpetrator of an incident that might involve a crime, reportable or otherwise, please immediately contact the Duke University Police Department at (919) 684-6571 or (919) 684-2444 after hours. If you are a designated Campus Security Authority, please complete an incident report form and submit it to Duke Police.
Campus Security Authorities and all other staff and faculty are reminded to report any allegation of sexual misconduct involving a student as required by Duke's policy on Student-to-Student Physical Sexual Misconduct. Please also familiarize yourself with Duke's policy about minors in university programs.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss the specifics about an incident or the Clery Act, please contact us.
