Citizens' Police Academy

The DUPD Citizens' Police Academies are designed to help create community understanding of the challenges and joys of working as campus police at Duke.  It is also about building relationships between the community and the police.  Duke University Police has three Academies. 

-          Faculty and Staff Academy

-          Student Academy

-          Alumni Academy

The Faculty Academy is a seven week course with a 2.5 hour class held weekly.  The Student Academy is held on two full Saturday’s from 9-3. 

Classes will be taught at 402 Oregon Street.  Some classes will require field locations to complete the designated training.  Transportation will be provided by DUPD.  Instructors will provide training much like that is given at an academy for police recruits.

Activities for the Academy may include:

  • Felony Vehicle Stops / T-3 Serpentine Course
  • Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Exercise
  • Mock Crime Scene Investigation
  • Introduction to Duke Healthcare Security - Life Flight tour
  • Courtroom Procedures with Representatives from the Superior Court and District Attorney’s Office
  • “Active Shooter” rapid deployment scenario using participants from DUPD
  • Firearms Safety Class at the Range
  • Graduation Luncheon

Upcoming Academies

Academy 12 starts on September 12, 2018 and goes through October 25, 2018 with seven separate sessions; the second Student Academy will be held on Saturdays: September 15, 2018, October 13, 2018 and October 27, 2018.  The Alumni Academy starts on September 18, 2018 and goes through October 16, 2018.  Graduation for all three Academies will be held on November 2, 2018.
